Road Trip 2018 – New Zealand – Queenstown and The Sounds

After a long set of flights from Seattle, through San Francisco and Sydney it was wonderful to finally arrive in Queenstown and have an evening stroll down to the beach, and a glass of wine at Rodd & Gunn before dinner at The Pier.

The second day started with breakfast at The Bathhouse, some rain, before we headed into the hills and Corona Peak, the Historic Arrowtown Chinese Settlement, then a snack and some wine at Gibbston Winery before heading along to Cromwell. The day finished with an evening drive along the shore of Lake Wakatipu.

From Queenstown we headed over to the Southwest, and Doubtful Sound. This part of the adventure started with a cruise from Manapouri across the Lake of the same name, before heading by coach through a tunnel where we boarded a boat for an overnight cruise through the Sound and out to the Tasman Sea and back. A few penguin sightings on the way, and spectacular waterfalls supplied by the recent rains.

On returning to dry land we were on a boat soon after, for a trip across the lake through glow-worm caves in Te Anau. Then we headed West – to our next Airbnb in Company Bay, on the peninsula just outside Dunedin…
